I played hardball with Microsoft phone support and won

I mentioned a while back that I installed Windows XP on my laptop using Boot Camp, but that I had exceeded the number of times that I could activate my copy of Windows.

The Internet activation told me that my license was no good any more,  the automated phone bot told me that my license was no good any more, the live phone person told me that my license was no good anymore.  Instead of caving, I told him exactly why that statement was ridiculous (valid XP license, using it on ONE machine, legally and all that).  And he shut up and handed me an activation code.

Big step forward for me... I even got a little indignant (it's amazing how the prospect of paying another $150 for something you already have can do that).

Oh, and I continue to want Call of Duty 4 pretty badly. *drums fingers till Mac release in May/June*

Go you for sticking it to the man! If you like the satisfaction of getting the best of corporations when they owe you - you might like The Consumerist. It's a pretty cool website for consumers with lots of good tips. I got some helping hints from them when I went to bat against my old HMO plan. I totally got my way on each and every issue. So satisfying.

M$

M$ is evil, so expect evil (un)support. :-)

Ubuntu running on my desktop running VMware workstation. I run 3 instances of Windows XP, and one instance of (shhhhh ... don't tell) OSX.

No issues. If I do have an issue, clone another windows install from a template and fire it up, 5 minutes at the most to recover.
