Family History

Grandpa Darrel Liberation Article
Over the last few weeks, our family has been going to Hayward to clean out Grandma Elsie's trailer and move her stuff to the new apartment in Livermore.  Last weekend Dad and Uncle Larry were digging in the tool shed and came up with the attached news article.

As many of you know, Dad's birth father, Darrel Arnold, was an Army medic in the European Theater of World War 2, and was captured by the Germans near the end of the war.  This news article documents his release by the Russians.

We haven't done any more digging to find out which paper this ran in, or more about the camp he was kept in, but we'd love to.  Does anyone have any thoughts on resources we could use to find out more?  I'm sure there must be something on these Internets to help with this sort of thing.

This is very neat, Jason!  What a special find.  But, I don't know too much about the online ancestor history resources.  I have been to some sites that you have to pay for... I haven't found a free one...yet.

Wow that is such a cool piece of family history! I wish I could help you in the "more information" department, but the last time I tried to research old newspapers, I ended up at the library coming through microfilm's page by page. Exhausting. Who would've thought that I'd become totally dependent on the word search function in Firefox? :-)

The best one that I know about is the LDS one.  It only works with your deceased realtives though, so you have to know a bit of history in order to find more.  Most records seem to be for people born before 1850-1900.

Very cool Jason!  I love family history, and for a while my Mom and I were really digging into ours.  We used ancestry.com, but you have to pay a fee to join.  We did it for two years, splitting the cost but unfortunately we let the subscription expire.  I do think the LDS resources may be free.  Anyway, have fun!  It's addicting though, to start researching that stuff!
